What is Dialysis?

For sure you have heard there are a lot of people who are taking dialysis treatments. There are various people who experience having kidney related problem and this is one of the most effective treatment that is used in order to replace the lost functions of the kidneys. What is the dialysis and how does it work? This is a specific treatment that is used by patients who have acute kidney failure. Those who have seriously damaged or lost kidney functions are also expected to use dialysis.

Why is dialysis important?

Dialysis is essential as it replaces the lost function of the kidney. Everyday, kidneys filter 1,500 filters blood. The body has a lot of toxins and other wastes and when a person loses its kidney functions, you can just imagine how the wastes are removed. If a person goes through the day with the kidneys losing its function, the amount of waste would increase which can result to coma and worse death. This is basically one of the reasons why a person who has kidney failure or damage should take dialysis treatment right away.

Types of Dialysis

There are two main types of this kind of treatment which include hemiodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. So, how does this treatment differ? What is the most suitable treatment for a person who has kidney damage or kidney failure?

Hemiodialysis: This type of dialysis is where the blood would circulate outside of the person’s body. It makes use of a certain machine that comes with special filters. The blood will come out using a flexible tube that is put into the vein. Basically, this treatment replaces the functions of kidneys. It filters the wastes found in the blood. After that, the filtered blood goes back using another catheter.

This specific treatment would last about 3 to 4 hours a week. Depending on the condition of the patient, the time may vary. Patients can take the dialysis treatment either at home or they can go to facilities that conduct such type of treatment.

Who can take hemiodialysis at home? Those people who want to learn how to do it home can actually use this treatment. If you have a stable condition, this is also a safe option. However those who are suffering from other diseases and illnesses, this might not be a good option.

Peritoneal dialysis: Another type of dialysis treatment is the Peritoneal dialysis. With this treatment, a person makes use of a tube that contains glucose and other essential minerals. The tube is then inserted to the abdominal cavity. What this treatment does is that it uses the natural filtering capacity of the peritoneum. It filters the waste products in the blood since the kidneys fail to do its work.

There are two different types of peritoneal dialysis: the Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) and the Continuous cyclic peritoneal dialysis (CCPD). The Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) does not use any machine. With this method, the patient can do it on her own or with the assistance or the help of a caregiver. With this treatment, the dialysate is placed in the abdomen for about 8 hours. You will have to do this every day for about 4 to 5 times in a day. The other kind is known as the Continuous cyclic peritoneal dialysis. It makes use of a machine which does the fluid exchanges. This treatment is done at night while the patient is at sleep and it should be done every night too. It takes about 10 to 12 hours. After the treatment, the person keeps the fluid and will have another session again the next day. This particular treatment is strongly recommended for patients who want to have a more convenient dialysis treatment.  Learn more about Dialysis Side Effects.

Benefits of Dialysis

Dialysis has a lot of benefits for the patient. Although it cannot entirely replace the functions of kidneys, it can at least aid in filtering blood and removing wastes. What dialysis is that is that it ensures that the body runs normal even if the kidney  is damaged. Without dialysis, the waste in the blood would eventually accumulate which would in turn poison the blood. Dialysis alone cannot cure kidney disease. The patient may have to take or undergo other treatments.

Are There Risks in Taking Dialysis?

There are risks in taking this treatment. A person undergoing dialysis may experience bleeding, low blood pressure and may have air bubbles in the blood. Some may also have irregular heartbeat.

Kidney Failure Symptoms

Knowing the symptoms can be definitely useful for you to avoid worsening the problem. There are symptoms that you can easily see. The symptoms will not manifest right away. Once you notice that you easily get tired and you frequently urinate beyond the normal, this is one symptom that you might be experiencing kidney failure. For men, they may experience having erectile dysfunction. Other symptoms include the following: shortness of breath, water retention, nausea, blood in urine. Aside from these symptoms, a person suffering from kidney disease may also have anemia.

Causes of Kidney Diseases

There are different causes of kidney diseases. For one, a person who is suffering from diabetes, he or she is at higher risk of having kidney disease. Another cause is hypertension. Those who have high blood pressure are also at higher risk of having kidney disease. If a person is constantly exposed to lead and solvent, he is at risk of having kidney problems. There are also instances wherein a person has physical injury. For instance, if the person experiences a situation where the kidneys are directly damaged, it can result to kidney failure. Other causes include over consumptions of medications, yellow fever and jaundice to name a few.
